After months of practice, we VR Dance Academy students and our teachers are proud to have performed in this showcase and show the results of our hard work!
In this event, we had not one, not two, but SIX dance choreos that you can watch individually! In order, they were:
- 👑 Viennese Waltz
- 🐍 Tribal Belly Dance (I performed here!)
- 🎷 Jazz
- 🏯 Asian Fusion
- 🐝 Ballroom Fusion
- 👠 Vogue
When I logged in VRChat and joined my choreo mates for the performance, I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a bit nervous when the instance was almost full within 10 minutes.
However, I managed to calm down by telling myself: “It’s not the first time you have a packed show. Just stick to the choreo, follow your leader and have fun.”
You might be wondering, what’s a “leader” in this context?
The choreo that my group was following is this:
- Have an organized choreography with pre-determined movements;
- Have a group of 2 or 3 people in a triangle, who have a rotating leader, who improvises belly dance moves for the other two people.
I decided not to be the leader in this, as I didn’t feel confident enough in doing that, whenever I tried during the training I would forget all of my dance moves 💀
So my promise to myself, is to get that dang confidence!
I think that every single choreo was absolutely great and extremely impressive that people can do that in VRChat, which presents its own set of challenges:
- Latency between players;
- Lack of physical touch makes it very hard to dance in a couple;
- A limited physical play space, in which you need to be very careful not to destroy anything!
Not to undermine anyone’s performance, but given the list above, I have to say that the Viennese Waltz one was the most impressive, since that dance requires physical cues to the other dancer in order to know what to do next.
The VRDA teachers managed, somehow, to make that work in VRChat, and I hope in the future to be able to get that kind of skill as well!
Here’s to this year, to become more confident in getting out there and learning how to dance!
